Dermatopathology is the study of skin disease at a microscopic level. When the patient’s history and visual examination of the skin is insufficient to diagnose a skin disease, the dermatologist may obtain a skin biopsy. After processing such a specimen in a histopathology laboratory, the tissue sample is examined by the dermatopathologist. In some instances, additional highly specialized techniques such as immunohistochemistry and immunofluorescence are utilized. Given that there are over 1500 skin rashes and skin tumors, the accurate diagnosis of skin disease may be quite challenging.
In December, 2005, The Skin Surgery Center opened its paraffin histopathology laboratory. John Abernethy, MD, PhD joined The Skin Surgery Center in the summer of 2008, and serves as our dermatopathologist and laboratory director. Dr. Abernethy received his MD and PhD from Duke University School of Medicine. He completed specialty training in dermatopathology at Wake Forest University School of Medicine, and at The Institute for Dermatopathology at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, PA. He has held faculty positions at Duke University, the University of South Alabama, and the University of Pittsburgh.
Dr. Abernethy holds specialty certifications from the American Board of Pathology (Anatomic and Clinical Pathology) and the American Board of Pathology and American Board of Dermatology (Special Certification in Dermatopathology). He is licensed to practice medicine in North Carolina, Alabama, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Virginia and South Carolina. His extensive experience and acumen, and his availability for on site consultation with The Skin Surgery Center physicians have proven to be of extraordinary value to many of our patients.
